Interview: Pete from Penguins

Penguins is an instrumental doom rock band from Melbourne's heart, they have been recently been branching out from his usual sole improiv noise into a full band mode, I thought I would interview the "front man" Pete to get more of an understanding on some of the happenings in Melbourne.

What bands do you play/have you played in the past? What sort of range of music is that?
Little Killing, Agonhymn, Woollen Kits, Go Genre Everything, The Bunyip Moon, Pathetic Human, Teen Archer, Rort, Elizabeth Pistol Club, Loveletting & The Weeping Hearts, Yolke.
Ranges from noise, doom, pop, grind, punk and so on.

Tell me about your latest Penguins album?
We setup our gear and got levels the night before in my lounge room - the next day we banged it out to an 8 track. The only overdubs were some guitar parts in 'Downcast' and 'The Wreckage'. It was mixed by all four of us in about two months and mastered by Dav Byrne (Agonhymn).

What made you wanna turn it into a full band?
I had a bunch of songs and ideas that weren't going to work as well with just me and a backing track.

What is the most awesome gig you have played and why?
Probably Cobra Bar (upstairs at The Tote) - it was really hot and intimate. Everything sounded great and it was a nice vibe. So sad to find out two days later that the venue would be gone in the next week.

Melbourne is rather known for its grind scene, how is that going and what are some of the highlights of that scene?
There is always quality grind happening. Agents Of Abhorrence are one of Australia's best.

What is the future of grindcore?
Can't see it changing too much - why fix what ain't broke.
Are you partial to an occasional offerring of funk-grind?
Could work.

Some of Melbournes best bands going at the moment?
AOA, Little Killing, Go Genre Everything, The Enclosures, The Bunyip Moon.

Melbournes latest closures are pretty fucked, what are the best venues going at the moment?
Bar Open, Old Bar, Birmingham Hotel.
Any future plans this year music wise?
Give the band a break for a while, maybe release some live recordings, work on a solo album and do a solo tour. Bring the band back to Sydney later in the year.
