Arrowhead - AtomsmasherIt would seem that a duo of Sydney stoner rock bands have launched new this December. Birdmouth have released their debut Convalesce through Grindhead Records, while Arrowhead have put out their long-awaited full length Atomsmasher through Green Media.

Arrowhead - Atomsmasher: Well-produced stoner / desert rock trio bringing to mind Kyuss, Black Sabbath, Queens of the Stone Age and Monster Magnet. Take a listen over on ReverbNation or buy the sucka from Waterfront Records.

Birdmouth - Convalesce: Retro, blusey stoner rock oozing pure class. Calls to mind the likes of Down, Graveyard and Soundgarden. Take a listen over at YouTube (up on Bandcamp soon) or buy the sucka from Grindhead Records.

The visuals behind Australian grind: Glenno launches his new site

Posted by Lachlan

Municipal Waste design by Glenno / Glenn SmithIf there is one single visual artist that has been most strongly associated with the Australian grindcore scene above all others,  that would have to be "Glenno" (Glenn Smith).

Glenno has been creating brilliant illustrations for the Australian underground music scene for countless years. I can remember when I joined on to Grindhead Records back in 2005, Glenno was always our go-to man for incredible artwork at an obscenely reasonable cost.

This man has the utmost respect of the Australian underground for good reason, having worked with the likes of Captain Cleanoff, Blood Duster, Agents of Abhorrence, Ebolie, Grindhead Records, 4 Dead, Pisschrist, Volatile, Pure Evil Trio, the Sydney underground zine staple Unbelievably Bad, Obscene Extreme festival, Slaughterfest, East/West Death Grind fest, Monster Sessions, Hard-ons, Meatlocker, Insect Warfare, Electric Wizard, Pod People, Municipal Waste, Willie Nelson, Black Sabbath and countless others.

In any case, old mate has a brand spankin' new website up, so go check it out, admire his work and commission him for all your grind-art needs! Oh, and be sure to like him on Facebook.

Keep up the great work pal! Love from your AusGrind pals.

4 good reasons to catch Slaughterfest this Saturday

Posted by Lachlan

I thought I'd do up a quick article with a few reasons why you shouldn't miss out on saucy Sydney's Slaughterfest III this Saturday at the somewhat seedy Sandringham Hotel (Alliteration. I'm clever.) - other than the obvious - that there are a whole score of kick-arse bands, and you can enjoy 12 hours of Australian grind, death, stoner and doom for a mere $20.

Captain Cleanoff: One of Australia's most renown grind bands. These guys deliver a slew of old school punk-influenced grind tunes in the style of Napalm Death. Their toe-tapping tunes recently took them over to Europe to play Obscene Extreme 2009. They also supported the awesome Brutal Truth while they were at it.

Captain Cleanoff - Hardcore Fashion Parade

The Kill: If Captain Cleanoff are one of our more renown grind bands, then The Kill are definitely our most violent; channeling the sheer unabated blasting aggression of Discordance Axis and Gridlink. Unpretentious caustic grindcore. This will be their first Sydney show in a long, long time (that is, if they ever even played in Sydney when Neil was singing for them...).

The Kill - Axe Attack / We Want Blood

Looking Glass: Fuck Wolfmother. These guys are hands down, without a doubt the best stoner rock band currently active in Australia. Fusing the nightmarish intensity of Jimi Hendrix psychedelia with baked Black Sabbath riffing and the sludged out heaviness of Kyuss, these guys will fucking blow you away - guaranteed. They have an incredible energy live. Don't miss this one.

Looking Glass - Acid Tongue

Ebolie: Sydney's booze-fueled metallic grinders with a penchant for bad jokes, drunken intensity, and dropping 16th notes without anyone particularly noticing. A combination of Nasum, Botch, Cephalic Carnage and The Dillinger Escape Plan. Get loose. Between you and me this might be one the last times you catch these guys. They're also supporting Brutal Truth the following Monday.

Ebolie - Cronullafornia

For the record, Pod People don't seem to have a fucking thing up on YouTube. Bastards.

Catch you all there Saturday. Things kick off at midday and the show may sell out - so get there early to avoid disappointment.

9 Australian bands you would do well to hear

Posted by Lachlan

Alright, it's another slow new day/week. So here is a list of killer bands you should familiarise yourself with. Be forewarned; most of them are not metal (which shoudn't really bother you if you have a taste in music rather than a taste in one genre).

Brian Campeau: an incredible acoustic singer/songwriter originally from Canadian, but now located in Sydney. Brian has an incredible vocal range matched with a very unorthodox style of guitar playing. His recorded works are influenced by the likes of Thom Yorke and Bjork; balancing soaring emotional vocals with equal parts minimalist acoustic recordings and dreamy atmospheric textures.

Five Star Prison Cell: a totally unique Australian metal band based heavily around the polyrhythmic complexity of Meshuggah with a healthy helping of groove. These guys are further differentiated by an extremely dynamic vocalist. There is definitely no other band like them; and after seeing these guys play last Friday I have to say they are probably the most insanely tight fuck-off musicians I have seen from a band in a long time.

God God Dammit Dammit: an 13 piece funk/party band featuring members of The Rivalry, Space Bong, Robotosaurus and I'm sure plenty of others. Somebody's getting FUNKY.

Helm: I cannot say enough good words about these guys. They have taken the high points of Cult of Luna, Neurosis and Isis and transformed those elements into something really unique. Amazing clean sung harmonies accompany anguished screams and an endless back catalog of killer riffs, build-ups and meditations. Musically these guys fucking know how to structure a song. The more I listen to their debut album, the more I begin to realise that it will not take long for these guys to surpass anything Isis and Cult of Luna have had to offer - and considering my love for both those bands, that is not a small statement to make.

Hospital the Musical: the meeting of Botch, The Locust and The Dillinger Escape Plan. Insanely talented musicians making technically obscene, raging hardcore. Now that could sound like a recipe for disaster, but this bands flirtation with the experimental and dedication to constantly pushing their music in new directions make these guys Australia's best band in the genre since The Rivalry. Their new full length REDorphan is fucking amazing.

Looking Glass: these dudes hark back to the days when psychedelic rock ruled the earth with guitar-wielding gods with obscene narcotic-based diets. Without a doubt, this is THE BEST fucking band in Australia when it comes to stoner and psychedelic rock. They take the best elements of Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix without ever sounding derivative. Their live presence is absolutely fucking crushing; and once more (as seems to be the theme) their musicianship is impeccable. Guitarist/vocalist Marcus is one of those rare virtuosos on guitar that makes everyone shut the fuck up and stare in disbelief at the maniac hacking at his guitar strings in total aural ecstacy. Fucking check them out.

Pirate: insane psychedelic and progressive rock. These guys are like The Mars Volta... if The Mars Volta were just 4 dudes playing intensely complex prog shit infused with such incredible groove-hooks and catchy rhythms they didn't need a vocalist to back them up. These dudes are relatively new to the Sydney scene; and fuck me if they havent got everyone's undivided attention.

Squid: two drummers, a double-bassist and two saxes busting out insanely catchy beats in stupid time signatures, and then proceeding jam and dance. I don't know what to call this other than a party jazz jam band, but that label hardly does the immensely talented band members any justice.

The Bakery: this is THE danceable funk/jazz band in Australia.
