REVIEW: Buckshot Facelift – Anchors of the Armless Gods

Posted by Matt

Out of Huntington New York Buckshot Facelift have released their latest full length called "Anchors of the Armless Gods". Independently released by the band themselves without assistance from a label this is a limited pressing on an array of colored vinyl, one side the LP has 14 brutal grinding tracks while the other an etched artwork (see image below). Other than being a very attractive release this album is brutal as, 14 tracks of heavy grindcore in the vein of Napalm Death.

A great contrast of brutal blasting and d-beat breakdowns, catchy as while still being able to rip. Some of the guitar reminds me quite a bit of Converge tones but still lots of Napalm Death in there. Some of the tracks are more technical technical grindcore songs that can rip your face off while other songs are very groove grindy similar to Blood Duster but with more expansive vocal techniques and not afraid to slow it down a bit (like in Raping the Spider Demon). I think that it is important that bands are able to take from their predecessors and do what has been done before, but well and vary it.

I think this is the sort of grind album you can enjoy more with every listen, on the 2nd and 3rd listen I was finally understanding what was going on with the layering of vocals, missing out on much the first couple of times I listened to it.

The production is also pretty freaking good, you can here its mastered qualities on the vinyl but at the same time they limit the effects on the main vocals so its still sounds like a lead singer ripping into you as opposed to overtly pitch shifted, they have also mixed in low and high vocals down in the mix to fill up much space left open with a single style of vocal technique. Buckshot Facelift have aimed to create a very full sound with the panning guitars and bass. On listening to their older stuff on myspace they have come a long way.

This album is definitely punk influenced grindcore, thankfully because I tend not to listen to much metal. Very different to all the stuff coming out of Australia. Keep an eye out for it, will be available in Missing Link and Repressed Records very soon.

Shitloads of grind news from Circle of Dead Children, Captain Cleanoff, Kill The Client, Beyond Terror Beyond Grace and loads more

Things happen. It's a scientific fact. Here are a collection of things that have allegedly happened (to be proven or disproven at a future point of time).

  • Circle of Dead Children recorded their new full-length Psalm of the Grand Destroyer back in November 2008. Vocals were finally laid down last week; now the recording is to be mastered by Scott Hull, then released by Willowip Records.
  • Beyond Terror Beyond Grace are finishing up recording vocals with Tim Carr at Studio 301 next week. Artwork is being worked on by someone called Rainsong, who has worked on designs for Nevermore, Jeff Loomis, All Shall Perish, Whitechapel, Aborted, Strapping Young Lad and The End. Not cheap I'm guessing. Apparently we can expect the album title and perhaps a tracklisting to soon follow.
  • 4 Dead have a new album coming up. FUCK YES! They record late October it would seem.
  • Portal have a new track online for download through Profound Lore Records. Download it.
  • Frank Rizzo are finally back in action with a new live track and rough demo track up on their MySpace.

Grind and/or die.

Buckshot Facelift demoThose cool muthafuckers Buckshot Facelift have been nice enough to post their 2005 demo online for all of us to steal.

Buckshot Facelift are a cool punk influenced New York grind band that formed out of the ashes of the intense tech-death band Biolich. Their debut album Universal Goat Tilt is very much worthwhile. They're expecting to release a new album in 2009.

Check it nice.

News from Total Fucking Destruction, Antigama, Dog Fashion Disco, Buckshot Facelift

Peace, Love and Total Fucking DestructionTotal Fucking Destruction - the band Brutal Truth drummer Richard Hoak has called his "grindcore performance-art project" - have thrown a new track up on their MySpace page.

The track Non-Existence of the Self is from their forthcoming album. To call that song different is an understatement. I have no fucking idea what I think about it - it's like a mix of a radio rock verse and a screaming, thrashing blast beat chorus. It's definitely piqued my curiosity.

Their third album Peace, Love and Total Fucking Destruction is due out on October 28 on Enucleation Records was recorded, mixed and mastered by Dan O'Hare (Brutal Truth).

Antigama New VocalistAntigama have just entered the studio to record their as-yet-untitled fifth full length album. The album will also be their second for Relapse Records. The follow up to Resonance is being recorded in their hometown of Warsaw at Progresja Sound with producer Szymon Czech (Third Degree, NYIA, Versania, Unsun). The session is expected to take about two week with mixing to follow. An early 2009 release date is planned.

Guitarist Sebastian (hehe) promises it will be their best yet and blah blah blah blah blah. And for all you drum freaks, the 'gama drummer Krzysztof "Siwy" Bentkowski has been feature on, so go scope it out. There's a fair bit of cool shit actually on that site. Well worth a read.

Dog Fashion Disco - Beating a dead horse to deadDog Fashion Disco are set to release a new CD and DVD; Beating A Dead Horse To Death... Again and DFDVD II respectively. Beating A Dead Horse to Death is a retrospective compilation album that comes two years after their swan-song avant-garde fucking masterpiece Adultery (one of my favourite albums of all time). They're flogging off some rare and unreleased material along with a handful of live tracks.

The DFDVD II is the sequel to the groups first DVD which was funnily enough called DFDVD in 2005. It looks like there is two full live sets here from their farewell gig as well as the Adultery CD Release Party. As a massive Dog Fashion Disco nerd it should come as no surprise I will be purchasing both from Rotten Records.

Some tracks off the new album are available to listen and their MySpace page.

Buckshot FaveliftBuckshot Facelift have put up two new tracks from some release called Anchors of the Armless Gods. These guys were previously in a fucking amazing experimental grind and gore band called Biolich who you all need to check out right away. I'm a bit of a fan of these guys, but the quality of this recording totally eclipses everything else I've heard from them. Scope out some new New York grind!
