This will just be a quick self-indulgent write up to cover the Scumfest 2009 festival that took place over the Australia Day long weekend in Adelaide. All I can say is that it was fucking awesome. From the venue Worldsend, the crowds and the mix of bands that played, the festival really exceeded my expectations.
Kill A Celebrity was invited alongside Dining in Tuscany to participate in Scumfest, and I can recall from memory that Beyond Terror Beyond Grace (NSW) was invited over last year as one of their first interstate shows. What I was really impressed with was the vibe of the festival; the promoter Kegan (vocalist of Space Bong and Death-Cult Jock) goes out of his way to invite bands that he is truly passionate about rather than fill up the bill with token acts. Not only is he a great promoter, but he is extremely hospitable - offering us free accommodation and even food from his kitchen. We made sure we sent him something as a token of our great appreciation.
As for the bands themselves there were a few solid standouts. Death-Cult Jock and Corruptors both stood out as two extremely fast, tight and violent new old-school grind bands to look out for. Dining in Tuscany delivered their typically energetic and ultra-tight brand of epic blackened grindcore to an absolutely mesmorized crowd. Captain Cleanoff and Robotosaurus absolutely destroyed the fucking venue as the headliners of each night, boasting enormous live sound and ridiculously catchy mid-paced mosh-friendly grind. Unfortunately the killer Zappa-meets-Parilament-esque party band God God Dammit Dammit wasn't able to play on the Sunday night, but we were able to catch them in a jam earlier in the day.
The highlight of the weekend for me by far was Space Bong. Man did they fucking CRUSH me (and why wouldnt they with members of no less than FOUR killer SA bands; The Rivalry, The Guantanamo Bay City Rollers, Meat Wallet and God God Dammit Dammit). A sledge hammer of some of the heaviest, vile, sludge-ridden stoner doom I have ever heard. Rumour has it that Anna V of Crux is releasing their upcoming album, and I for one am extremely jealous. These guys are no doubt one of the best doom bands I have seen in Australia - so don't miss a chance to catch them. If I have my way we should hopefully be seeing them in Sydney before the year is out.
Scumfest is another welcome addition to the growing mini-festivals across Australia (a la East/West Death Grind Fest, Grindcore 2009, Devils Kitchen, Chaos ACT, Slaughterfest, Brutalfest and so on). I definitely endorse it and urge anyone keen to attend. We're going to have to see if we're welcome back for Scumfest 2010.

Anyway here is the super-sexy Scumfest line-up that was at least in part - if not in its entirety - arranged by Keagan of the suffocating doom/grind band Spacebong. The line-up has some killer names on it including Captain Cleanoff, Kill A Celebrity (NSW), Dining in Tuscany (NSW), Prison Bitch, Corrupters, Robotosaurus, God God Dammit Dammit, Spacebong, Ok Peligro and S.A. Waste.
It's an awesome mix of grind, hardcore, metal, punk, crust and doom and it all goes down at Worldsend in Adelaide over 2 days, the 2nd night being an all-ages kinda deal. Can't fucking wait.
Well it's good to see that Matheson kept you up to date with all the latest grind news homosexual folk scandals. The inadequate faux-grinder also had his birthday a little while ago. Good on him.
In more important news I just got word that SCUMFEST is going down on January 24-25 in Adelaide and I've got some promising rumors for bands that might be playing;
- Captain Cleanoff
- Dining in Tuscany (NSW)
- God God Dammit Dammit
- Kill A Celebrity (NSW)
- Prison Bitch
- The Corruptors (grind feat. members of The Guantanamo Bay City Rollers)
- Thrush (grind feat. members of Jungle Fever)
- Space Bong
I'll be tharr (right tharr). None of this has been officially announced and I'll keep you all up to date.
These things happened last time Adelaide was unfortunate enough to host Kill A Celebrity:
Any self respecting Melbournite will be watching The Kill destroy all alongside Super Fun Happy Slide and Pathetic Human at the Arthouse tonight; just like most self respecting Sydney folk will be scoping out Dining in Tuscany, Crux and Walrora (VIC) at Maggotsville.
Give em clam digger...
Captain Cleanoff have set up an Australian tour! It's about fucking time! Check out the dates on their MySpace page. http://www.myspace.com/captaincleanoff
Vomitose Zine has shitloads of new material such as interviews from The Kill, Ambramelin, Sinistrous Diablos, Skullhog, Eyehategod, Fuck I'm Dead and loads more. It's a great zine being written out of Melbourne, so be sure to check it out. http://vomitose.blogspot.com
The Kill are working on a new release featuring their new(ish) vocalist Nik (Super Fun Happy Slide). I know I can't fucking wait to hear it; these guys absolutely tore it up at Grindcore 2008. The bad news is they wont be heading up to Sydney in the near future as all their energy is currently devoted to this release. http://www.myspace.com/thekillgrind
Dining in Tuscany are playing at Maggotsville this Friday night with Crux, Walrora (VIC), Scum System Kill and Voting with Bricks. This will more than likely be their last show for a while as they go into pre-production for a new release in the near future. http://www.myspace.com/diningintuscany
Beyond Terror Beyond Grave have uploaded some videos and a tour diary from their recent shows in New Zealand. From all reports they went down really well, and even discovered a few cool NZ grind bands. You can catch the lucky bastards live when they support Pig Destroyer and Carcass, or on the Newcastle date on Captain Cleanoff's national tour. http://www.myspace.com/beyondterrorbeyondgrace
Crux and Grey Daturas have been added to the line-up for Pig Destroyer's Sydney show. I kinda expected some grind bands as support, but seeing Crux with a huge sound at the Gaelic should be interesting, and this will be the first chance I've been able to check out Grey Daturas live. http://www.myspace.com/cruxhc
Kill A Celebrity are flogging off their sexy new shirt design for $20 (postage included) or $15 at shows. They played last Friday with Matt (Anal Discharge, The Temperamental Pocket) filling in on vocals, and are back to a three piece as Shannon (New Blood) recently withdrew from the band, citing the belief that he felt the bands new direction was 'too brutal, too fast, too technical and simply all too much for me'.
The band are finalising artwork for their split release with UK noise/grind band Krupskaya on Grindhead Records. Their demo CD 'Grindslaughter' is still available for download through their MySpace blog. http://www.myspace.com/killacelebritygrind
Code of Lies are flogging off their cool new EP The Age of Disgrace on their MySpace page. The EP is expected to be officially released through Grindhead Records in the near future. http://www.myspace.com/codeoflies
Rather Be Dead should have copies of their new MCD 'Stock' available for sale this week. They've got some killer merch available too; but hurry - stocks are running out. http://www.myspace.com/ratherbedeadband
Summonus are looking for gigs to show off their THC-drenched brand of sludgey doom stoner rock and flog off some new shirts and CDs. Check these guys out if you havent already. Features Rod Hunt on vocals. http://www.myspace.com/summanus666
Fuck Oath have some new songs up and are looking for a bass player. http://www.myspace.com/fuckoathoz
I guess thats all for now.
