Download: Throat Of Dirt Demo (2012)
One of my current favourites in the Australian fences are Canberra's Throat Of Dirt. Supported by public servants and dosed up on dissonance, the guys have recently recorded a 2 track demo that is now available through their bandcamp page. You can name your price.
They are also currently looking for another guitarist, maybe with some vocal opportunities. Here's what their facebook says:
We are contemplating/toying with the idea of adding a second guitarist (preferably one with vocal abilities) to our live line up and possibly permanent part of the band. If anyone is interested please message us. Canberra based preferably but Sydney based is a maybe.
If that appeals to you, perhaps the best course of action to take would be to download the demo, listen lots, contact the band, send nudes and positive vibes, cross your fingers. That, of course, is starting with the assumption that you own a guitar, and can play... if not, my advice is this: work in a shitty job, build hate, save for guitar, purchase guitar, realise it's probably not good enough, return to shitty job for more years, build more hate, get better guitar, realise you need an amp and possibly transport... oh you get the idea. I'm not Tolkien, so I'm not going to write too much.

Free Download: Vendors Rich//Shut In – Digital Split
Dudes split their songs for a release, Melbourne math metal band Vendors Rich and Shut In (Diploid, World at a Glance and Idle Minds). For free download now on the good ol' trustworthy bandcamp. Two very different approached to music, Shut In offers more soundscapey songs, as well as layering some lo-fi brutal downtrodden noises and d-beat, contrasting with Vendors Rich energetic metal/thrash. Never let genres get in the way of a good friendship I say.
Mother Eel Loathes Dicks
Agitator Records has recently released Mother Eel's Loathes Dicks.
Presently there is no functional way to capture and distribute the complete, intense and disturbing experience of Mother Eel live... this is something the band thinks is a pleasingly, unpleasant representation.
Featuring 12 crushing works over 15 ear tearing tracks in 38 minutes, pieced together from three or so recordings made live in the venue, at the Lewisham Hotel, Sydney, 2011. Each recording comes with its own balance based on the location of the recording device.
Loathes Dicks boasts:
- vocals from Adrian Johnstone, the departed drummer who returned to do some vocals
- full booklet artwork with Mother Eel logo by ashcroft (dillonashcroft.com), ruined by semenstorm, notes by semenstorm, kenna, & cunningham
- a solid sense of loathing and disgust.
The track listing includes songs such as Sucking To Gain (Like Leeches), Tomarchyoo, Another Face For Beating & The Erection Of Pain
It is intended that this record be played loud. Experiencing the record at the 'minimum listening volume' will require you to significantly raise your voice if you were to try to conduct a conversation whilst listening. The ideal listening can be achieved at a volume you can feel, or on headphones, loud, curled up at the bottom of an inky black, damp & crawling, pit. with your eyes wide open.
Agitator Records also offers live bootlegs from bands like Ivan & The Backpackers, Dark Horse and Black Jesus as well as numerous other releases, including Mother Eel's back catalog. All for free, all to agitate.

DOWNLOAD: Suffer – Raw Violent Assault
Perth grindcore fools Suffer have put their tour tape Raw Violent Assault up for free download. Originally release by No Patience, its probably out of print.
DOWNLOAD: Laeirs Self Titled E.P
Laeirs have release their new EP for free download on their Bandcamp. This skramz band are nice little freshies, existing in the exciting new Sunshine Coast scene comprising primarily of DIY garage and house shows, thus breeding their own style of hardcore, screamo and punk music. The songs show some nice variety in melody, moving seamlessly from slower moving stuff to straight up thrashy parts, but still being able to maintain their average song length under one minute.
This debut EP is a good first start for this productive band, and it always makes me happy when great new Aussie screamo bands start up, as we have lacked in the past 3-4 years much of the great screamo kicking round in the early 00's. Recorded by Chris Brownbill, the dude behind all the best new DIY Brissy recordings. I look forward to seeing these dudes live, screaming their little hearts out in a garage or house show near you.

A slew of Iron Lung and their record labels back catalogue is now available for streaming and MP3 download from
