Long Weekend Options pt 1: This Is Not Art

Posted by mothereel

Today is hump day.  If you're like me, which I hope that you're not, otherwise I'd probably have to change myself even further to attract people to make out with...  uuhhhh... oh yeah!  You may be thinking of the long weekend fast approaching!  Here's the first post of things you could potentially do and may actually involve some of the ol' blasty beats.

First option, and I'm posting it now so you've got a bit of time to get your wheels into action, is Newcastle's This Is Not Art festival.  It started as a part of the Writers Festival and the Electrofringe Festival, both taking place in the area.  The two float into and out of each other seamlessly and there's lots to do.  Here's the link to each day's schedule, with my personal highlights:

Friday
Highlights:
Get Rid of Gina
Who Killed the Avant-Garde? Apathy and Contemporary Art
The Right Stuff

 Saturday
Highlights:
Authorial Ethics in a Self-Authoring Age
Sonic Ontology: The Art of Noise
The Book of Hours

Sunday
Highlights:
Electrofringe Showcase
Zine Fair
Closing Night Party

More importantly, while you're up there, there's this good 'un gig!
https://www.facebook.com/events/156595287865268/
Featuring Flowers for Cops from Victoria and some localish bands.    8 bands for $5.  That's pretty great.  You'll have to click that link to get the list of bands because I'm pushing you out of your comfort zone.

What are you looking to do?  Any other gigs or events?  Got anything you're looking out for at TINA?

Long Weekend Options part 2 comes up on Friday.  Got something that needs to be there?

Sydney Summer Festival Guide 2008

Posted by Matt

Love is for losersSummer is on its way and all the tickets for "festival season" have all but come out. I am interested to see what people are going to and why this summer. There is a butload of awesome shit going down but everyone has only a limited amount of dosh to spend on them, if I was fucking rich I would be hitting up a lot more things than I am but here is my choice gigs this summer which you can catch me at:

29th December - Punx Picnic - Newtown Park
A DIY Festival full of punk rock bands. Could be fun to go for just for the laugh.
Freeeeeee

24th January - Decolonise Festival - Marrickville
A Festival set up between all the different DIY warehouses at the back of Marrickville.

8th February - Laneway Festival
The Hold Steady, Girl Talk, The Drones etc. Went to this last year and lost my freaking mind. Definately a festival I recommend, an entire festival squeezed between a couple buildings in the middle of the city. What more could you want.

Other Shortlisted Festivals:
Soundwave - Minus The Bear, Bloodhound Gang, Horse The Band,
All Tomorrow Parties - Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, Harmony
Peats Ridge Festival - Wagons, Sparkadia
High And Dry Festival - Over New Years @ Wisemans Ferry

Shit Festivals:
Big Day Out
Nevereverland 08 - Dance fest without the awesomeness of Daft Punk
Anything else The Presets are playing.
