REVIEW: The Kill – Shower of Bricks

Posted by Lachlan

The Kill - Shower of Bricks MCD (Blastasfuk)The Kill put together Shower of Bricks for their recent USA tour. Featuring 6 tracks from their upcoming split 7 inch EP with none other than Captain Cleanoff, this MCD acts as some sort of cruel grinding cocktease for what is undoubtably going to be an incredible release.

If you know these guys there are no surprises here. For me, The Kill have always the pinnicle of pure, unabated grindcore. You won't find them mindless sitting on a two-chord punk riff for 30 seconds - and you definitely aren't about to be violated by a mid-song chugging breakdown. The Kill are all about speed, intensity and aggression. They strip grindcore down to its pure essentials,  then proceed to beat you over the heard with them in a blood-drunk brainsnap that is as maniac as it is brutal.

Shower of Bricks unequivocally delivers everything there is to love above the band -- Jay's punchy blastbeats hit with seemingly unwavering, inhumane power; Rob's tight shredding guitar work and Nik's ear-shredding, distorted mid-high screams, lyrics mixed with his style of benign humour:

What was that object that just hit my leg / first band of the gig and some bloke hits the deck / didn't see Insect Warfare from his hospital bed. (Passed Out)

The Kill - Shower of Bricks MCD (Blastasfuk)With this MCD The Kill have reminded us once again that they are pound-for-pound the most intense band on earth.

If you enjoy the likes of Insect Warfare, Gridlink, old Pig Destroyer or early Napalm Death and you haven't heard these guys; correct this disgression now.  Go buy this disc (and Hate Sessions and Blast Beat'n The Shit Outta PBS) from Blastasfuk and await their split with Captain Cleanoff with an appropriately hushed awe.

Listen to a song here.

Buy the album here (you might have to email old mate direct).

And come to Sydney again soon you jerks.

Lachlan’s Top 5 Australian grind albums

Posted by Lachlan

It's been a slow news week and I can't find shit to post, so here are my Top 5 Australian grind albums I recently had to compile for a magazine interview with some additional explainatory bullshit attached. Why not list your favourite 5 Australian grind albums too so we all feed like one big warm, happy eFamily (or is that iFamily?)?

In no particular order;

Captain Cleanoff DiscographyCaptain Cleanoff - Discography (No Escape Records): Insanely catchy punk-influenced grindcore; the perfect distillation of Napalm Death style grind coupled with truly infectious grooves. The original pressing of Captain Cleanoff's self-titled was one of my first ever encounters with grindcore, and still remains one of my favourite grind albums of all time. Grindhead sells it.

The Kill Hate SessionsThe Kill - Hate Sessions (No Escape Records): Blisteringly intense, caustic and relentless single-pedal grindcore which has featured at various times members of Fuck... I'm Dead, Blood Duster, Undinism and Super Fun Happy Slide. This three-piece are up there with Gridlink, Pig Destroyer, Discordance Axis and Insect Warfare in their ability in creating fast, violent and stripped-back grindcore. Grindhead sells it.

Agents of Abhorrnece Earth.Water.SunAgents of Abhorrence - Earth.Water.Sun (Numerical Thief): Frantic Discordance Axis-styled discordant guitar riffing fused with chaotic song structures and delivered with absolutely crushing intensity. To be completely honest, these guys even showed up Insect Warfare when they supported them in Sydney. A wall of chaotic grinding noise.

Blood Duster str8outtanorthcoteBlood Duster - Str8outtanorthcote (Relapse Records): This is THE Blood Duster album to own. It captures the band at their most stoner-rock orientated moment, melding incredible blues-baked stoner riffs and psychedelic grooves with erratic bursts of blast beats and Blood Duster's hilarious sense of humour.

Five Star Prison Cell The Complete First SeasonFive Star Prison Cell - The Complete First Season (Faultline Records): An absolute oddity in the world of grind. These guys mix grindcore with The Dillinger Escape Plan-esque rapid-fire syncopations and complex Meshuggah-influenced polyrhythms with a vocalist that constantly conjures up references to Mike Patton's experimental approach to vocals. Incredibly awesome, complex and unique. You could argue this isn't strictly grindcore, but I don't care. It rules.

This weekend Ebolie and Kill A Celebrity triumpantly return to the stage at Bald Faced Stag. Be there.

The Best of 2008 – Lachlan

Posted by Lachlan

Tim from EbolieThe year is nearly fucking over and I am glad. I am done with this year. Despite that pessimism, there have been a few highlights. Doing this AusGrind thang with Matt has been pretty fun as we slowly build up our jerk base.

We really hit our stride this year with Grindhead Records and released some of my favourite albums to date; Gruesome Stuff Relish, Pathology, Beyond Terror Beyond Grace’s amazing full length, Long Pig and Sound of Detestation. We also put on an amazingly successful Slaughterfest II, with the Canberra show selling out at The Basement. Thank you to everyone who helped out or came to a show.

Ebolie recorded a full length album that I am very proud of. Kill A Celebrity managed to put together a split with my favourite chaotic grinders Krupskaya. I got to see Pig Destroyer, Meshuggah, The Mars Volta, Grave, Against Me!, Graf Orlock and many others, and even got to play with the mighty Insect Warfare - twice. Meanwhile local Sydney bands like The Crooked Fiddle Band, Hospital the Musical, The Bakery, Pirate, Squid, Club Consolador and Squat Club reinvigorated my love for the local music scene.

All I want to do with my life is play music and tour, so lets hope 2009 brings more of that. I’m a total fucking narcissist, so while here are my top albums of the year, expect a more verbose bat-off in the next few days with a description of each.

What albums did you guys really enjoy – inside and out of the grind scene? I’m curious.

The Kill ‘Hate Sessions’ OUT NOW!

Posted by Lachlan

The Kill Hate Sessions - OUT NOW!Well, those kind chaps over at No Escape Records have once more released an absolutely essential Australian grindcore classic. I'm not kidding when I say that you NEED to own this to qualify as a fully formed human being. This is possibly one of the most insanely paced pieces of thrashing grindcore violence on earth; executed flawlessly.

This 'Hate Sessions' release features their awesome and long out-of-print MCD 'Soundtrack To Your Violence' which featured Jay from Fuck I'm Dead's insane single-pedal blast beats and back-up vocals (seriously, watching him play is down right scary), Roby from Blastasfuk shredding riffs and Tony from Blood Duster and The Day Everything Became Nothing screaming his lungs out like never before. Hate Sessions also has their cult-as-hell demo that was originally released as a cassette (ooh how retro).

Download the track We Want Blood from here, or scope out their myspace at

Here's the No Escape blurb:

Finally back from the dead after almost 5 years of silence, they have returned… Australia’s most blast as fuck band ever, the lynchpins of the infamous Melbourne Grind Syndicate have reformed. That band is, of course, The Kill! The Hate Sessions compiles their mindblowing MCD, The Soundtrack To Your Violence, which was released in 2003 by No Escape and ran out of print soon after and the legendary demo which was originally released on cassette also through No Escape and we are thrilled to have the honour of making their legacy of insane racket available once again!

The Kill pushed grindcore to such extreme heights that even 5 years later no one has been able to come close to the benchmark they set. Utterly frenzied and inimitable riffing, relentless single kick blasting ferocity and psychotically abusive vocals combined to create the most unique and extreme sonic violence ever laid down by just guitar, drums and vocals! You cannot protect yourself from what they have planned next, but you can familiarise yourself with their past atrocities so you can at least be prepared when you meet your untimely end.

There will be more. That’s not a promise. That’s a threat.
