Hospital the Musical In The Studio: Episode Mike

Posted by Lachlan

Hospital the Musical have to be one of the most uniquely talented groups of musicians in Australia. I've seen them a handful of times in the last year and have been absolutely floored by their musicianship, diversity and live energy. Really, these guys are one of those bands like The Rivalry that are just heads about the rest. They blend elements of Botch, Converge, Meshuggah and fuck knows what else, but it kills it.

They've been recording a new album (dubbed REDorphan) with the brilliant Tim Carr of Soviet Records and Tim Carr Audio (who Ebolie and Kill A Celebrity both worked with in 2008; and who also mastered Beyond Terror Beyond Grace's Extinction|Salvation). Their recording process sounds immensely fun and experimental; the guys even went to some fucked up grim cave to record some layers that "may or may not be used" in the final product. I can tell you, I'm really, really hanging out for this album and to catch them live again.

Here is the first episode of their REDorphan Studio Sessions featuring Mike (Drums).

The Best of 2008 – Lachlan

Posted by Lachlan

Tim from EbolieThe year is nearly fucking over and I am glad. I am done with this year. Despite that pessimism, there have been a few highlights. Doing this AusGrind thang with Matt has been pretty fun as we slowly build up our jerk base.

We really hit our stride this year with Grindhead Records and released some of my favourite albums to date; Gruesome Stuff Relish, Pathology, Beyond Terror Beyond Grace’s amazing full length, Long Pig and Sound of Detestation. We also put on an amazingly successful Slaughterfest II, with the Canberra show selling out at The Basement. Thank you to everyone who helped out or came to a show.

Ebolie recorded a full length album that I am very proud of. Kill A Celebrity managed to put together a split with my favourite chaotic grinders Krupskaya. I got to see Pig Destroyer, Meshuggah, The Mars Volta, Grave, Against Me!, Graf Orlock and many others, and even got to play with the mighty Insect Warfare - twice. Meanwhile local Sydney bands like The Crooked Fiddle Band, Hospital the Musical, The Bakery, Pirate, Squid, Club Consolador and Squat Club reinvigorated my love for the local music scene.

All I want to do with my life is play music and tour, so lets hope 2009 brings more of that. I’m a total fucking narcissist, so while here are my top albums of the year, expect a more verbose bat-off in the next few days with a description of each.

What albums did you guys really enjoy – inside and out of the grind scene? I’m curious.

Friday: Soviet Records Showcase at Hermann’s Bar (Hospital the Musical, Dining in Tuscany)

Posted by Lachlan

Sydney based record label Soviet Records is putting on a 'showcase' of sorts this Friday the 22nd of September at Hermann's Bar in Sydney University.

Here are the reasons you should go:

  1. Dining in Tuscany and Hospital the Musical are arguably two of the best bands in Sydney and Australia. They both play non-generic, complex, intricately structured extreme music; Dining in Tuscany sounding something like a combination of Converge, Isis, black metal and grindcore, while Hospital the Musical play intense hardcore in the vein of Botch, The Locust, Daughters and The Dillinger Escape Plan.
  2. The venue has a fucking sick sound, and hearing those bands in that environment should be more than impressive.
  3. Let's face it; you need to get out more and listen to some different music that doesnt just rehash bad Deicide b-sides.

See you there no doubt.
