The Kill / The Communion split 7″ OUT NOW!

Posted by mothereel

The Kill Split Artwork

Just released through Fat Ass Records is a great grindcore split featuring the Australian terrors of single pedal metal The Kill and New York's The Communion who on this release are having a crack at some sludge styled grindcore.

According to my source, The Kill's side of the split contains 5 tracks of extremely fast grind, and includes a cover of the Napalm Death song 'Dead'.  The Communion's side has 2 tracks of sludgey grindcore that combines elements of EyeHateGod, Buzzoven, Assuck & Phobia.

A good mix, with a little of something for everybody.

You can purchase it now through Fat Ass Records for 8 Euros / $10 with postage worldwide.

New music for your facehead, starring The Kill, The Guantanamo Bay City Rollers, Helm, Phobia, Altars and more

Posted by Lachlan

THE KILL: Melbourne's The Kill could be one of the most intense grindcore bands on earth (alongside the likes of Gridlink, Agents of Abhorrence, Discordance Axis, early Pig Destroyer and the like). They're about to release a live album they did for PBS Radio on No Escape Records. You can listen to two tracks Needs More Napalm and Fuck the Olympics on their MySpace page.

THE GUANTANAMO BAY CITY ROLLERS: There is a cool live clip up from the awesome South Australian grinding stoner/hardcore punk rock band The Guantanamo Bay City Rollers. It's one of those funky Facebook video things, but hopefully you can see it here (you may need to be logged in).

AGENTS OF ABHORRENCE / ROSKOPP: The awesome Agents of Abhorrence have teamed up with fellow Australian grinders Roskopp to release a split 7" from Crucificados, apparently.

HELM: Queensland's Helm have 4 of 5 new tracks off their upcoming album Volume 2... The Winter March - which is quite a lot when you consider their songs are all in the vicinity of 7+ minutes. Their new album is due out early 2010, and their debut album Keehaul... Volume 1 has been in almost constant rotation in my CD player since I purchased it. It is beyond highly recommend for fans of Cult of Luna, Isis and the like.

ALTARS: South Australian death metal band Altars have a new song up, which will form part of their split with Tzun Tzu. I'm not a fan of too many death metal bands these days, but these guys seem to have the whole Morbid Angel vibe going with an evil-as-fuck atmosphere to accompany it. Sounds promising.

GENE POOL SHARKS: Sydney thrashing 90s hardcore punkers Gene Pool Sharks have two demo tracks up.

EYETOFUK: LSD-soaked rocking cyber-grind whack Lithuanian cunts Eyetofuk are letting you download their Grindhead Records split with Putrid Whore for free.

PIRATE: Sydney prog wizards Pirate have some new songs off their latest release. I will go ahead and say these guys shit all over anything The Mars Volta could have hoped to achieve in the last few years.

KYU: kyü are an extremely promising new Sydney duo who you should all listen to.

PHOBIA: Orange County grinders Phobia have a new video clip up on their MySpace page for their track Rise Up.

- In other more important news, some vapid chick wants me to 'comment her truth box' as she is 'is bored and wants to know secrets'. I have something for her truth box right here.

REVIEW: Flagitious Idiosyncrasy In The Dilapidation – Self Titled

Posted by Lachlan

Ahh now see, THIS is what I was after. After my very negative reaction to the latest Magrudergrind album I needed some kind of sign to prove to myself that I could still enjoy crustier grindcore - and Flagitious Idiosyncrasy In The Dilapidation has more than delivered.

With their new self-titled full length Flagitious Idiosyncrasy In The Dilapidation has restored my faith in grindcore that does not rely on ridiculous complexity or excessive production values to create a listenable album. By the same token, FID are not a band who are stuck in one rigid subset of grindcore, and free themselves to incorporate an plethora of influences - and I'm not talking about obscenely electic jazz influences like Cephalic Carnage either. It's all fucking fast, filthy, furious fucking grindcore all the way; punctuated with savage blast beats and fucking intense vocals.

The album opens with a catchy burst of punk-influenced-grind a la Captain Cleanoff. From there I can pick out European style modern grooving breakdowns (Smudged), a slightly old school Bolt Thrower death metal influence in a slower tempo, tremolo-picked groove (Studeny Klih), some shamelessly catchy punk rock segments, a slamming brutal death metal moment (In The Sluge), an old school doom introduction (Unvoiced), a brief cock-rock moment (Into the Gray Room), an old-school chunky Obituary riff (Dusted Ratina), some very obvious throwbacks to Napalm Death (Into the Sluge) as well as spates of crusty powerviolence.

The production is reasonably solid all things considered; the guitar tone is slightly crusty but with enough clarity so that you can clearly make out each riff, and distorted enough to very happily fill out the sound with a slightly dirty bass chugging underneath. The vocals are a mix of slightly guttural bellows, distorted high pitched wails and almost black metal howls - a fairly dynamic mix for a grind band. What is even more impressive, is that all these tortuous sounds are the result of one tiny Japanese girls voicebox. Holy fucking shit.

This fucking great stuff, and very well worth fans of Insect Warfare, Phobia and the like to check out. If you need a second opinion, I will refer you to the original review of this album that successfully piqued my interest over at Teufel's Tomb (a review site I would definitely recommend you check out).

REVIEW: Death-Cult Jock – West End Blast

Posted by Lachlan

Death-Cult Jock are a new South Australian grind band that - in typically incestuous Adelaidian fashion - features members of other noteworthy groups of various styles including; God God Dammit Dammit, Space Bong, Robotosaurus and The Rivalry. If you're familiar with any of the aforementioned bands, then you should already know this is going to be some serious grinding business.

Death-Cult Jock play a stripped back distillation of early punk-influenced Napalm Death and slightly more death metal influenced Terrorizer. Jock's appropriately metallic, crusty bass crackles underneath the mix of frenzied, blasting drums and tremolo picked, distorted guitars. Kegan's vocals are a combination of extremely harsh mids and low belows, appropriately tinged with a misanthropic gain-ridden crust/black metal edge that remind me ever so slightly of Tomas Lindberg's work in Lock Up, with the occasional Mitch Harris-esque high shriek.

Of the twelve songs that appear on the album, seven clock in at less than a minute. Infact, four songs only hit the 10 second mark, including the tracks Christian Punks Fuck Off, Uni Wankers Fuck Off and Death-Cult Jock Fuck Off. The group also expand the sound with a few brief nods towards old school doom - and let me clarify; we're not talking about the more modern European grind bands trendy penchant for a slowed down hardcore riff passed off as doom; I mean the REAL doom. The final track Numb ends with an absolute monster of a riff that would be appreciated by fans of Celtic Frost. An absolutely crushing way to end a relentless grind album (and the bands live set).

Death-Cult Jock's West End Blast is a solid piece of unabated aural aggressiveness; 17 minutes of channeled anger and brutality that comes highly recommended for fans of old school acts like early Napalm Death, Terrorizer, early Brutal Truth and Repulsion as well as more modern groups throwing back to the original premises of grind such as Lock Up, Captain Cleanoff, Insect Warfare and Kill the Client. There's also enough of a crust/punk element to interest fans of Phobia, Discharge and Unholy Grave.

Let's be thankful that in this era marked by the saturation and infilitration of Metalcore groups and Indie pop rockers in the local music scene there are still strong grindcore groups forming over Australia.
