Squat Club “Corvus” album launch this Saturday
Squat Club are launching their highly anticipated album Corvus this Saturday the 20th of February, 2010 at The Bald Faced Stag thanks to those delightful chaps at The Bird's Robe Collective.
If you haven't heard these guys, ensure you correct this by clicking HERE now. I won't bother hiding how much I love these guys. They are the best band I have seen come out of Sydney. Fuck it, lets go further: these guys are quite easily one of my favourite bands of all time. You may have heard the members playing in the likes of Ebolie, Anklepants, THE BZNZZ, The Bakery, Captains or Shirlow (all undeniably cool bands in their own right).
Their style mixes crushing polyrhythmic Meshuggah metal with early epic King Crimson prog, beautiful layered soundscapes that bring to mind Pink Floyd, the inanity of Battles and the sheer psychedelic mindfuck of The Mars Volta.
They are playing their LAST GIG EVER this Saturday night with the awesome Pirate and The Red Corvettes (now named Bessom?). I strongly suggest you attend. I actually decided to flog off my AC/DC ticket (front-most standing section) to catch this gig. It will not disappoint. I think I'm actually more excited for this than I am The Necks, Soundwave or Faith No More. To have a band this unique and this undeniably talented in our own backyard makes me giddy like a schoolgirl.
They are the good ONES man. If you have any fucking self respect you will be there.

Thursday: Squat Club’s final gig (feature Pirate and Capt. Kickarse)
The band I have ranted about for the last 8 months - Squat Club - are coming to an end. This Thursday the 8th of January they will be playing their final show at Hermann's Bar, Sydney University as their immensely talented drummer Evan (who also plays in Shirlow and Captains) heads overseas.
Joining them on their last show is the incredible psychedelic prog-rock Mars Volta-esque stylings of Pirate and the kick arse tunes of Captain Kickarse and the Awesomes.
- Mike and the Magic Tones
- Squat Club
- Captain Kickarse and the Awesomes
- Pirate
- The Forensics
Not one you want to miss if you're a fan of progressive or psychedelic music. Pirate are on at 8:00pm so you want to be there for that. Squat Club should also have an album out "sometime". A wank-y description of Squat Club's unique music to follow.

**SQUAT CLUB: as a 4 piece consisting of a drummer, bassist, piccolo bassist and eukekele/guitarist, Squat Club are one of the most unique, talented and exciting bands to emerge out of Sydney in recent memory. Their style is akin to the amalamation of Eastern/Secret Chiefs 3 influenced polyrhythmic structures with Meshuggah, early King Crimson, Pink Floyd and other assorted 60s and 70s psychedelic/progressive groups and a slight post-rock influence.
Squat Club combine brilliant progressions with mind-twisting rhythm changes and a beautiful jazz-tinged dynamic drumming feel akin to Jon Theodore's work in Golden and The Mars Volta. If you're a fan of Secret Chiefs 3, King Crimson or a range of avant-garde, post-rock or progressive genres, then this is something you wont want to miss.
Pig Destroyer Australian Tour starts tomorrow!
The awe inspiring grind three piece that is Scott Hull, J.R. Hayes and Brian Harvey's Pig Destroyer begin their Australia tour tomorrow night in Hobart!
Like Meshuggah, this tour is likely a once in a life time opportunity. Pig Destroyer usually only play a very limited number of shows within their own country - and rarely tour overseas let alone at all. If you're sitting on the fence on this one, just man up and grab a ticket - otherwise you might miss out on your only chance to see (in my opinion) the worlds greatest grindcore band.
Also another quick announcement that THERE IS NO PRE-PIG DESTROYER GRIND INSTORE @ UTOPIA FOR SYDNEY. Some two-bit, small-town jerks called Machine Head are doing some instore shit instead of Ebolie, Kill A Celebrity, Code of Lies and Fuck Oath. Just who do they think they are?
I think my plan for the Saturday show will involve heading down to check out the incredible Isis and Meshuggah inspired polyrhythmic stoner/sludge post-metal stylings of Shirlow at The Sandringham Hotel for a few cheap beers. Screw sitting around at The Gaelic Club and buying $9 bourbons all night.
See you all there. Provided my memory survives I should do a write up of the gig.
A scary as fuck live clip where J.R. Hayes breaks his mic...
...and is still heard over the fucking band.

Saturday: Squat Club at the Excelsior
I've been ranting and raving about Squat Club for a long, long time now. These guys will only be around for another 2 or 3 months, so I'd recommend getting out there and seeing them whenever you can.
They're playing this Saturday at Bird’s Robe Collective at the Excelsior Hotel along with some other prog-rock bands I can't say I've heard before: Meladora, Aquanaut (VIC) and Six Thinking Hats. It's their first ever gig at a 'proper' venue with their full line up (drums, bazuki, piccolo bass and bass) featuring members of Ebolie, Captains (The Captains Package), Brass Knuckles, Anklepants and Shirlow.
Stylistically these guys combined Secret Chiefs 3 style Eastern-influenced and Meshuggah polyrhythmic passages with the progression and build up of Jakob post-rock with a strong 70s King Crimson progressive and some Jon Theodore-esque (The Mars Volta, Golden) and Brann Dailor (Mastodon) drumming. It's really quite difficult to describe; and if you're a fan of music it's definitely worthwhile checking them out.
You could wear a cape if you wanted to, you probably wouldn’t get kicked out. I'll see you there.

Observe: From 3:03 onwards demonstrates why I love these guys.
New bands you should know in the Australian scene
UPDATE: Dudes, this page is 4 years old! Check out the updated 2012 version here.
Alright, so I've heard some new Australian bands recently that you'll do well to get off your arse and check out.
Corruptors (SA): First we have a group from Adelaide called Corruptors, which features Cheese (guitar) of The Guantanamo Bay City Rollers fame, as well as Kerry (vocals) and Wardy (bass) from Los Diablos and Chris Canini (drums) of Lapdancer. They would like to tell us that they are now "coming at your ear pussies with a big grindy dildo of extreme noise love".
From the track up on their MySpace page, they seem to play ultra-pissed off old school thrashing punk influenced grind in the vein of Napalm Death, Venomous Concept, Terrorizer and Lock Up. Very cool, violent stuff which should be a hell of a lot of fun to see live. The guys are set to record 8 tracks at Capitol Sound Studios in September, and have their live debut coming up supporting Conquest for Death (USA).

Helm (QLD): Next up we have the Queensland band (Ghost at the) Helm, who play some post-metal sludge with some very cool clean and shouted vocals. In their single preview track I can hear big Isis and Cult of Luna influences with a touch of Pink Floyd and Mastodon.
If you're a fan of any of the psychedelic, stoner, post-rock, post metal, shoegazer and doom genres, then check these guys out. They were recommended to me by Five Star Prison Cell - one of Australia's best extreme metal acts - and they arent wrong; this'll be a band to watch out for.

Shirlow (NSW): Shirlow is something of a super-star new Sydney band, featuring members of scene whores from 1 Shot Kill, Captains (aka Captains Package), Squat Club, Unkle Jed, Qwerty and loads more. They're playing some very Cult of Luna, Jakob and Isis-inspired slightly sludgy and psychedelic post-metal, with some truly monstrous riffing, some killer drum beats which are uncharacteristically complex and grooving for the style.
I went and saw these guys play their first show at The Annandale Hotel a few months back since I have a hard-on for Evan McGregor's ultra-groovy Jon Theodore-esque drum style, as previously showcased in Squat Club. They really blew me away, I was definitely not expecting something quite *that* good for a bands first show. The sound was fucking enormous, and I'm going to make sure I catch their next gig.
Shirlow live at Utopia Records part 2 of 2.

Squat Club (NSW): I'll save the best for last. What can be said about these guys? The line-up is comprised of drums, bass, piccolo bass and a bazuki with the occasional guitar. Again, this band features members from a wide range of other groups like Ebolie, Captains, Brass Knuckles, Piston, Qwerty, Shirlow, The Mabobs and loads more.
I dont think there is any reasonable way to pin these guys down into a genre. They're like some unholy interbred seven-eyed, horned squid-beast, drawing influences from a wide range of progressive genres. The biggest influences I can hear are Secret Chiefs 3, Meshuggah, The Mars Volta, Pink Floyd, King Crimson and god knows what else. The result is something truly unique and awe inspiring.
Do yourself a favour and listen to the song on their player. Honestly, if you have taste in music, it should change your life. These guys only have 1 or 2 shows left in them - so if you get a chance, consider yourself lucky to have the chance to go watch them. They are fucking amazing. Awkwardly catchy and complex time signatures all round!
Part 4/4 from Squat Club's recent set just to give you a little taste.
The whole gig is up on youtube and viewable in its entirety on their MySpace page.
Breakcore warehouse party – tomorrow night!
You know what kicks arse? Breakcore.
You know how grindcore is essentially the most chaotic, fucked up, fast, neck breaking, mind fucking, shit ruining, violent music in the extreme punk/metal realm? Breakcore is essentially the equivalent in the electronica world - shit so fucking complex, fast and insane that the vast majority of the world is reduced to a screaming, thrashing mess of "TURN THAT FUCKING NOISE OFF!!!".
Anyway: I love it and I think it's insanity has the potential to appeal to fans of some grindcore. So much so that I am thinking about putting on a grindcore vs. breakcore show. Some examples include some of the work of Aphex Twin, Venetian Snares, Squarepusher and probably others.
I haven't been to any local breakcore gigs myself, so there are a few DJs on this show I will be on hand to hear. Furthermore, it's a party - and lets face it, you have nothing better to do. Come down and get mangled with us. Some names playing are: Killjoy, Cat-Grrl, Maladriot, Rainbow Ejaculation, Anal Erection, Unhappy Animals Make Bad Meat, Abortifacient, Eject, Dalit, B.I.N.T.
EDIT: change of venue!
