Press release follows:

Sydney grindcore 2-piece thedowngoing are set to release their newest aural atrocity "ATHOUSANDYEARSOFDARKNESS"

The 12 track, 10 minute noisegrind experiment will be released via “Cancerous” Slimline CD and be available for streaming/purchasing/pirating at THEDOWNGOING.BLOGSPOT.COM from Friday July 20th, 2012.

After the 2011 release of their Untitled EP mini-CD, thedowngoing have caught the attention of many in the grind community, including AGORAPHOBIC NOSEBLEED vocalist J. RANDALL, who digitally re-released the EP on his own label GRINDCORE KARAOKE.

thedowngoing would go on to be awarded the title of BEST RELEASE OF 2011 by GRINDTODEATH.COM and 7th by GRINDANDPUNISHMENT.BLOGSPOT.COM "...Untitled EP shows the band reaching new, dizzying artistic heights."

"ATHOUSANDYEARSOFDARKNESS" builds on the platforms laid by 2011's Untitled EP, refining and pushing thedowngoings' unique sound further. Recorded, mixed and mastered by Jono Boulet (Jonathan Boulet, Snake Face) "ATHOUSANDYEARSOFDARKNESS" is a vicious listening experience as thedowngoing teeters on the edge between grindcore and complete audio collapse.

And what better soundtrack to the harsh winter conditions, than to have thedowngoing venture out from their nihilistic cave dwelling existence to provide godless grindcore to the frostbitten masses on their 2012 WINTER TOUR throughout July and August.

Doomsday, Slaughterfest and Progfest: Highlights of the Australian underground music scene

Posted by Lachlan

One of the most positive elements of the Sydney underground music scene are the annual one-day "mini-festivals" that pop up. After a couple of successful years these festival become anticipated staples in a music-lovers diet.

Personally, there are three which I look forward to above the rest;

There are certainly others. Bastardfest is trying to make a splash in the metal scene this year with dates all across the country. Devils Kitchen provided an awesome day of stoner rock and psychedelia until they decided to take a break. Birds Robe Collective's alternate fest Featherfest is also one to watch out for.

What makes these festivals so good? Simply because they represent a critical mass of quality bands and promotional resources. Sure, dozens of disjointed, poorly promoted little pub-bills fail each month, but it is these mini-festival promoters who are bringing in solid attendance records by aiming a little higher than your average pub-gig --- and the dedication is paying off.

Be sure to check these dates out;

  • Slaughterfest IV takes place on 30 July at the Sandringham Hotel.
  • Progfest 2011 takes place on 13 August at the Annandale Hotel and 3rd September at the Epsy.
  • Doomsday Festival takes place on 14 October in Brisbane, 15 October in Sydney, 21 October in Adelaide and 22 October in Melbourne.

The visuals behind Australian grind: Glenno launches his new site

Posted by Lachlan

Municipal Waste design by Glenno / Glenn SmithIf there is one single visual artist that has been most strongly associated with the Australian grindcore scene above all others,  that would have to be "Glenno" (Glenn Smith).

Glenno has been creating brilliant illustrations for the Australian underground music scene for countless years. I can remember when I joined on to Grindhead Records back in 2005, Glenno was always our go-to man for incredible artwork at an obscenely reasonable cost.

This man has the utmost respect of the Australian underground for good reason, having worked with the likes of Captain Cleanoff, Blood Duster, Agents of Abhorrence, Ebolie, Grindhead Records, 4 Dead, Pisschrist, Volatile, Pure Evil Trio, the Sydney underground zine staple Unbelievably Bad, Obscene Extreme festival, Slaughterfest, East/West Death Grind fest, Monster Sessions, Hard-ons, Meatlocker, Insect Warfare, Electric Wizard, Pod People, Municipal Waste, Willie Nelson, Black Sabbath and countless others.

In any case, old mate has a brand spankin' new website up, so go check it out, admire his work and commission him for all your grind-art needs! Oh, and be sure to like him on Facebook.

Keep up the great work pal! Love from your AusGrind pals.

July 30: Slaughterfest IV featuring Fuck I’m Dead, Looking Glass, Mother Mars, Agonhymn and loads more!

Grindhead Records and 666 Entertainment present Slaughterfest IVFor me, annual underground stoner, doom, grind and metal festivals like Grindhead Records' Slaughterfest, 666 Entertainment's Doomsday and Little Bird Agency's Devil's Kitchen are often sure-fire shortlisters for the best gigs of the year. The promoters of each of those festivals usually have quite a knack for producing a smooth-running, well thought-out and well-promoted festival with just the right amount of big interstate names and variation of styles.

This years Slaughterfest - the 4th edition since the festivals inception back in 2007 - is certainly no exception. Infact, I honestly cannot remember a more impressive and varied line-up - nor a show I was more excited about. The value for money (15 bands for $20) is certainly nothing to scoff at.

Grindhead Records and 666 Entertainment have teamed up to bring us an incredible day, balanced out with a nice mix of grind, stoner, sludge, metal, crust, punk, hardcore and doom. If I can give you one piece of advice it would be to GET THERE EARLY. My gut feeling is this one is certainly going to sell out (you should be going out of your way to catch Fat Guy Wears Mystic Wolf Shirt anyway, they fucking RULE).

Without further ado, here is the line-up for Slaughterfest IV:

Slaughterfest IV

Entry $20, doors at midday.

- Fuck I'm Dead (VIC)
- Looking Glass (ACT)

See you there!
