Jess Locke’s latest EP out on Lesstalk Records “Skins” is about change. It is about relationships and growing up (yep, still growing up). Lyrically, the songs largely speak for themselves, the music also reflects and accentuates to the ups and downs; the subtlety and the intensity that the lyrics convey. This is a sad album in many ways, but its also extremely hopeful. Skins is catharthis.

This newest release was recorded primarily over a couple weeks in the kitchen of Garden St, opposite the office of Lesstalk Records (aka my bedroom). With a couple of mic’s and whatever instruments we found lying around in the loungeroom this was constructed slowly and meticulously whist still maintaining as much awesome vibe as possible. In the general style of everything Lesstalk, it features guests from many other artists on the label, those who happened to be passing through the Garden St house at the time. These guests include Marnie (Sweet Teeth, Origami Girls), Nathan (Sweet Teeth, The (temperamental) Pocket, N. Martin & Wells), Matt (Michael Crafter & The (temperamental) Pocket) & Maxwell (Halal, How Are You? & Rusty Emerton).

‘Sydney to Newcastle’ band-buds Sweet Teeth and Bare Grillz are “yeeeewwwwing” their split cassette tape. They got 2 launch shows with the first one in Melbourne on Saturday. The “Sweet Grillz” split was recorded in March in the garage of Newcastle slacker-punks The Nugs, released on Newcastle label Forbidden Shopping and limited to 100 copies.

New Blog – Vacant Valley

Fairly newly established Melbourne record label Vacant Valley have a new blog, they have some quality stuff up there including free downloads to past releases from PoPolice, Penguins, Bang! Bang! Aids!, Pop Singles plusmore. Pete is already racking up quite a mighty fine set of releases including the Pop Singles 7″ (which is great) and the newest Little Killing EP (which I’ll buy tonight when i get home from work because they are my 3rd favourite band from Melbourne behind Agents and Penguins) plus more in the works. On a side note Vacant Valley also have heaps of Lesstalk stuff in their distro made available to Melbournefolk.

Crab Smasher Melbourne Tour Feb 2010

Crab Smasher, Newcastle’s greatest longest running noise pop band are touring to Melbourne this week! They are heading down for the Summer Winds Festival and also while they are down there they are playing a massive amount of shows squeezed into a couple days. Join them on their plan to conquor Melbourne yet again at one of the following shows.

All their past releases including Lesstalks most recent release are now available for listening from their bandcamp website, where you also have the option of donating your money to keep them going, and hopefully some time this year they will release their next full length.
